Industrial Sandeel fishing ban would be big boost for Scotland’s iconic seabirds

A new consultation to be launched by the Scottish Government will consider proposals to end commercial fishing for sandeels in Scottish waters, a big boost for Scotland’s puffins and other iconic seabirds.

A ban on industrial sandeel fishing would be a big boost for Scotland’s puffins and other iconic seabirds, say the Scottish Greens.

The party has welcomed the announcement of a new consultation launched by the Scottish Government to consider proposals to end commercial fishing for sandeels in Scottish waters.

Sandeels are a vital life source for our seas, particularly for puffins and kittiwakes which are globally threatened with extinction.

Scotland’s fishers have already stopped this destructive practice, with 94% of sandeel fishing in Scottish waters being done by Danish fishers for animal feed.

The Scottish Greens spokesperson for coastal communities, Ariane Burgess MSP, said:

“Sandeels are a vital food source for our seas, especially for puffins and our other iconic seabird populations.

“Our oceans are under threat like never before, and so is the wildlife that depends on them. Our seabirds need our help.

“Scotland’s fishers have already stopped industrial sandeel fishing, it’s fair and right that the ban is extended if we are to protect our vital marine life.”
